In the Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State, a tragic canoe accident has resulted in the death of four individuals, with six others still unaccounted for. Five people, including the canoe paddler and a nursing mother, were rescued from the scene.

The search continues for a missing child and six additional passengers, as reported by Daily Trust. Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, the Madobi Local Government information officer, confirmed the details of the incident.

Yakasai stated that the bodies of the deceased—Maryam Jibrin, Yusuf Galinja, Kabiru Muhammad, and Safiyanu Musa—were recovered and laid to rest according to Islamic rites on Wednesday.

Following the tragedy, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Gora, the interim chairman of Madobi Local Council, visited the Kauran Mata community to offer his condolences. He assured residents that the council would support the affected families and provide necessary assistance during this difficult time.

Local resident Salisu Adamu Baure noted that this is the first fatal accident of its kind in the river, attributing the tragedy to the overloading of the canoe, which was carrying two bags of rice and a motorcycle.

Ibrahim Lawan, the ward head of Kauran Mata, urged the Kano State government and local officials to invest in modern speed boats equipped with life jackets to prevent such incidents in the future.

Saminu Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and mentioned that Aminu Garba, the councillor for Kauran Mata Ward, promptly alerted the state fire service after the accident.
