Abubakar Yuguda and his wife, Fatima Abubakar, have been arrested in Adamawa State for allegedly torturing their two-year-old stepchildren. The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the arrests on Monday.

According to police spokesperson SP Suleiman Nguroje, Fatima Abubakar was apprehended for physically assaulting her stepchildren—a girl and a boy—at their home in the Sanda Makama Ward of Yola South Local Government Area. The incident reportedly occurred after the children improperly urinated and defecated in the living room.

Nguroje stated that neighbors reported the abuse to the authorities, prompting police intervention. “Her neighbors informed the police about the maltreatment. She is now in custody and will be charged in court as directed by the Commissioner of Police, Dankom Morris,” he said.

On Tuesday, the police announced that Abubakar Yuguda, Fatima’s husband, had also been arrested. Both suspects have reportedly confessed to their roles in the abuse. They now face charges of criminal conspiracy and cruelty to persons.

“The couple, aged 28 and residing in Sanda, Makama B Ward in Yola South, were taken into custody following reports from concerned neighbors regarding the ongoing physical abuse of the two minors in their care,” Nguroje explained. The children, identified as Hafsat Abubakar (2 years) and Usman Abubakar (4 years), were subjected to severe mistreatment before being rescued by the police.

The suspects have been swiftly charged at Chief Magistrates Court 2 in Jimeta. Commissioner of Police Morris Dankombo emphasized the command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly children, and urged the public to report any incidents of abuse to the police.
