The Kano State government has launched an investigation into potential breaches of procurement laws related to a N440 million drug supply contract. This probe follows allegations from Dr. Bello Galadanci, a media content creator known for his criticism of alleged corruption among Nigerian officials.

Dr. Galadanci has claimed that N10 million was improperly diverted from each of the 44 local government accounts to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for medical supplies. This transaction is now under scrutiny for possible violations of public procurement regulations.

In response, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has significantly ramped up its investigation. The situation has garnered widespread attention and criticism regarding the state’s financial management practices.

On July 18, 2024, the PCACC issued summonses to several high-ranking officials from the Ministry for Local Government. Those called to provide clarification include the Chairman and Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Chairman and PRO of the DPM Forum, the Director of Local Government Inspection, and the Director of Planning.

Dr. Galadanci has accused the Kano State Government of sidestepping proper procedures in awarding the contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals, which allegedly led to the misappropriation of funds. Governor Abba Yusuf has denied any knowledge of this diversion and reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating corruption and preventing financial mismanagement.

Governor Yusuf has asserted, “My administration is committed to transparency and will not tolerate any form of corruption.” He has instructed the PCACC to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations.

In a joint statement, Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, and the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that the governor has mandated an immediate and detailed investigation. The statement added that officials named in the PCACC’s letter are scheduled to appear before the Commission on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM. This meeting, held at the Commission’s office, is a critical step in the ongoing inquiry into the N440 million procurement issue.
