The Accra Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, in partnership with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Ghana, is set to organize a significant prayer protest next week. This event aims to bring together Ghanaians from various backgrounds to join in prayer and action against the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, or illegal mining. Scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024, the protest is expected to attract participation from over 50 organizations that have expressed concern about the impact of galamsey on the country.

In their announcement, the organizers underscored the spiritual aspect of combating illegal mining, encouraging citizens to “call on God to do what we cannot do as humans” in this struggle. The church also emphasized the need for tangible efforts to combat the environmental degradation associated with galamsey. “While we do our part to urge the government to take necessary actions against galamsey, we must not overlook the power of prayer,” the statement highlighted.

This initiative reflects a growing concern among various sectors of society regarding the ramifications of illegal mining activities and the urgent need for collective action to protect the environment.
