Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that many Nigerian leaders currently holding public office lack the necessary character to lead effectively and should instead be incarcerated. Obasanjo made these comments during a meeting at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he hosted six members of the House of Representatives.
The legislators, led by Ugochinyere Ikenga, who represents Ideato North and Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, were at Obasanjo’s home to discuss proposed bills on a single six-year presidential term, rotational presidency between the North and South, and the rotation of governorship among the three senatorial districts in each state.
Obasanjo emphasized the importance of character in leadership, stating that many current public office holders lack this essential quality. He stressed that addressing Nigeria’s democratic system and governance structures is crucial, but equally important is the character of those in power.
According to Obasanjo, the country’s problems are rooted in the character of its leaders. He argued that no matter how the system is restructured—whether through a four-year, six-year, or seven-year term—the outcome will remain the same if the mentality and approach of the leaders do not change. He remarked, “Our main problem is ourselves. Until we address our own issues, it doesn’t matter if we change the terms or form of government. If the same people with the same mentality remain in power, there will be no improvement.”
Obasanjo also criticized the current leadership, suggesting that many should be in prison or face harsher penalties. He emphasized the need for a serious re-evaluation of how leaders are selected, including their character, track record, and whether they serve as role models.
He concluded that these considerations are fundamental to bringing about real change in Nigeria’s governance.
