The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has announced the creation of a Disaster Relief Fund aimed at addressing the challenges posed by natural disasters, including the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State.

This decision was confirmed during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, as shared by Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy. Edun noted that incidents like the floods in Maiduguri are expected to become more frequent due to climate change, highlighting the necessity for dedicated funding to tackle these emerging issues.

Additionally, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, disclosed that the government has dispatched a substantial amount of aid to flood victims in the region. This includes 100 trailers of milled rice, 50 trailers of maize, 30 trailers of sorghum, and 20 trailers of millet.

Onanuga stated, “President Tinubu has ensured that 100 trailers of milled rice, 50 trailers of maize, 30 trailers of sorghum, and 20 trailers of millet have been sent to the flood victims in Borno State.” He also mentioned that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has made available 2,000 water pumps to support communities still grappling with the aftermath of the flooding.

All relief items were delivered over the weekend by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
