The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has advised President Bola Tinubu to refrain from blaming others for the recent protests against his administration. The group pointed out that Tinubu himself had previously called for a revolution against former President Goodluck Jonathan, and should therefore not criticize the current protests.

Prince Justice Fakiyesi, National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere loyal to Acting Leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo, stated that the president’s speech failed to address the root causes of the nationwide hunger. Fakiyesi criticized Tinubu for labeling the protests as politically motivated, reminding him that he did the same during Jonathan’s tenure.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Fakiyesi said, “It is the same situation that occurred under former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Tinubu called for a revolution or protest. Now, when facing similar or even worse circumstances, he is blaming others.”

He continued, “We never believed that merely calling for dialogue would change anything. Tinubu has not changed his stance. I believe he was pushed to make that speech because it did not address the core policy issues that have led to hunger. Since he is not willing to reverse or accept responsibility, he attributes it to political motivation.”

Fakiyesi recalled Tinubu’s stance on subsidy removal, stating, “When he began his administration, he declared that the subsidy was dead and encouraged protests, acknowledging that his policies would provoke dissent. At his age, he understands that there have always been protests against subsidy removal.”
