North Korea has publicly disclosed images of its uranium enrichment facility for the first time, marking a significant reveal of its nuclear capabilities. On Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toured the facility, showcasing the centrifuges used to produce nuclear bomb fuel. This visit, covered by state media, included rare photographs of Kim inspecting the rows of metal centrifuges, though the timing and location of the visit were not specified.
Kim’s tour emphasized the need to ramp up production of weapons-grade material to bolster North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. He urged facility workers to enhance the production of tactical nuclear weapons, asserting that such advancements are crucial for the country’s defense against perceived threats from the U.S. and its allies. Kim framed the nuclear capability as essential for “self-defence and preemptive strikes.”
Furthermore, Kim condemned what he termed “anti-DPRK nuclear threats” from “U.S. imperialists and their vassal forces,” suggesting that these threats have crossed a critical threshold. In response, South Korea condemned North Korea’s revelation, reaffirming its stance against Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi confirmed that the U.N. nuclear watchdog had detected signs of reactor and centrifuge operations at Yongbyon. Kim called for an “exponential increase” in nuclear stockpiles and the development of new, more efficient centrifuges to enhance the production of weapon-grade materials. Experts have noted that these new centrifuges are smaller and more efficient, reflecting significant progress in North Korea’s nuclear technology.
