
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the drowning of two individuals in a boat mishap that occurred in Ipokia Local Government Area. The tragic incident was announced in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, in Abeokuta, the state capital.
According to the statement, “The command received a report of a fatal accident at the Ipokia Division on September 12, 2024, around 7:00 a.m. Two individuals, Awhanse Jimoh and Ahohe Jimoh from Ilepa Village in Ipokia, informed the Divisional Police Officer about two wood merchants who had fallen into the river.”
Odutola explained that the victims, identified as Ahohe Seido and a man known only by the alias Dogbon, were transporting firewood along the Gbodo Jego river in Ijofin, Ipokia, on their way to Benin Republic when the accident happened.
“During their journey across the river, a sudden and strong current overturned their boat, throwing all the occupants into the water. Despite rescue efforts, only two individuals were saved and brought to safety on the riverbank,” Odutola said. “Unfortunately, Seido and Dogbon did not survive, and their bodies have yet to be recovered, despite ongoing efforts by divers.”
The police spokesperson added that local divers are continuing search and rescue operations to recover the missing bodies. An investigation has also been launched to confirm the details of the accident and verify the survivors’ statements.
