A retired Upper Sharia Court judge, Mahmud Shehu, appeared before a Magistrates’ Court in Zaria on Tuesday, facing charges of assaulting a visually impaired woman.
The prosecutor, Inspector Adamu Abubakar, informed the court that Shehu was accused of trespassing and assault. These offenses are in violation of Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017.
Abubakar recounted that on September 6, Garba Adda’u, a resident of Gonar Ganye, Tudun-Jukun in Zaria, filed a complaint at the Tudun Wada Divisional Police Headquarters against Shehu. According to the prosecution, the retired judge unlawfully entered Adda’u’s property, locked the door, and assaulted the visually impaired housewife and her two aides using an umbrella.
As a result of the assault, the woman sustained injuries and was taken to the Primary Health Care Center in Tudun Wada for medical treatment.
The defendant, Mahmud Shehu, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In response, Shehu’s defense counsel, Mr. S.M. Abubakar, applied for his client’s release on bail. However, the prosecutor opposed the application, arguing that both the defendant and the complainant lived in close proximity, potentially endangering the complainant’s safety.
Presiding Senior Magistrate, Lukman Sidi, granted Shehu bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety, who must possess an international passport and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to October 8 for further hearing.
