The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has expressed grave concerns over what it calls a crackdown on its supporters and key leaders by security forces ahead of the September 21 gubernatorial election. On Tuesday, the situation intensified as reports emerged of 200 additional police officers being sent from Abuja to Benin City, the state capital, to make more arrests targeting PDP members.
With just over a week remaining before the critical election, tensions are running high in Edo State. The PDP has pledged to continue its campaign despite these obstacles, but there are fears that the police actions could impact voter turnout and the overall integrity of the election.

“The people of Edo State are observing closely. We will not be intimidated or silenced by these unlawful arrests,” a PDP official asserted. “Edo State deserves a fair and transparent election, and we will ensure that the people’s voices are heard on September 21.”
Governor Godwin Obaseki also criticized the situation, stating, “It is evident that the APC and its allies are not committed to a peaceful and credible election in Edo State.” He warned that the interference and collaboration with federal institutions to disrupt the electoral process pose a serious threat that must be addressed.
