Olusola Oluwaseyi Badero of the Yoruba Union, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorúbá, has urged residents of the South-West to participate in the peaceful protest starting on August 1st, despite opposition from Sunday Igboho. The Union has distanced itself from Igboho, criticizing him for allegedly siding with those who oppress the Yoruba people.

Badero highlighted that Igboho’s support for the oppressors reveals a lack of adherence to true Yoruba traditions. The Union expressed disappointment with Igboho, who had risen to prominence by advocating for Yoruba self-defense against Fulani herdsmen. In a statement released on Tuesday, Badero described Igboho as a political opportunist who has aligned himself with oppressive politicians.

Badero recalled that the Yoruba Union raised over N20 million through Maiyegun Diary Politico to support Igboho’s legal battle during his incarceration in the Benin Republic. However, they are now surprised by his support for a government that once exiled and jailed him.

“A leopard cannot change its spots. Igboho is known for aligning with oppressive politicians for personal gain while Yoruba people suffer,” Badero stated. He pointed out the insecurity faced by farmers, the rape of women by Fulani herdsmen, and the rampant kidnapping in Yoruba land.

Badero emphasized that the protesters are Yoruba sons and daughters who have lost their dignity and livelihood. “Sunday Igboho has no right to stop protests in Yoruba land. Only someone without honor would publicly disgrace their heritage. We are born with pride and dignity, not as slaves but as heroes fighting for our freedom,” he said.

The Union appeals to the Yoruba people to remain patient and continue their fight for justice. Badero stated, “We call on our people in the South-West to ignore Sunday Igboho and come out en masse from August 1st to 10th to peacefully demonstrate. No one can intimidate us on our land.”

Badero assured that lawyers have been mobilized throughout the South-West to monitor the protests. If any harm comes to the Yoruba people, President Tinubu, South-West governors, and Sunday Igboho will be held accountable. He warned against plans by some politicians to hijack the protest with thugs and cultists but affirmed that this would not deter the region’s resolve to protest.
