SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The United States Coast Guard is searching for a 22-year-old woman from Indianapolis who disappeared while swimming off a beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to a Coast Guard news release, the woman, whose name has not been disclosed, was visiting the island with friends. She went swimming with two of her companions at Condado Beach around 6:32 p.m. on Sunday, but they were caught in strong rip currents.

Although the woman’s friends were rescued and brought to shore by bystanders and local authorities, she remains missing. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly wearing a white shirt, pants, and swimwear.

The Coast Guard reported that their watchstanders at Sector San Juan were first alerted by a bystander who heard screams from the beach and saw two people struggling in the water. Rescue efforts, including a helicopter and personnel, were quickly dispatched to search for the missing woman.
