At least nine people have died after a boat sank off the coast of Senegal, the Navy confirmed on Monday. The tragic incident is the latest in a series of migration-related accidents in West Africa.

The boat, a pirogue, reportedly capsized on Sunday near the town of Mbour during an “irregular emigration” attempt, according to a statement by the Navy on social media platform X. Rescue efforts have been underway with the assistance of three naval vessels and a Spanish maritime patrol aircraft.

So far, nine bodies have been recovered, and three survivors have been identified. Local fishermen also rescued several individuals, although the exact number of those still missing has not been determined.

Senegal remains a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, despite the dangers of the Atlantic route. Strong currents, overcrowded boats, and poor conditions make this journey particularly perilous, leading to frequent deaths and disappearances.

This year alone, over 22,000 migrants have arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands, more than double the number recorded last year.
