Schools in several parts of Nigeria were scheduled to reopen on Monday, September 9. However, in Edo State, the government has postponed the resumption of both public and private schools indefinitely due to the recent fuel price hike.

A statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, announced the postponement, citing the impact of the fuel crisis on parents and guardians. The statement partially read, “An official directive from the government has postponed school resumption until further notice, owing to the tension arising from the recent fuel price increase and the difficulties faced by families.”

The government also advised parents and caregivers to closely monitor their children’s activities, given the heightened tension caused by the surge in fuel prices.

Recently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of petrol to ₦855 per litre at its retail outlets. This led to further price increases by independent marketers, who now sell petrol for over ₦900 per litre. Black market operators have reportedly raised their prices to over ₦1,000 per litre.
