Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been called to testify in an ongoing corruption and influence-peddling investigation involving his wife. This investigation, which nearly prompted Sanchez to resign in April, will have him interviewed by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado at the Moncloa Palace on July 30.
The inquiry is focused on whether Begona Gomez, Sanchez’s wife, leveraged her position to obtain sponsors for a university master’s degree course she managed. Peinado emphasized that Sanchez’s testimony is “convenient, useful, and relevant” to determine if there was any influence peddling involved. Gomez appeared before the judge last Friday but refused to answer questions, according to Reuters.
Gomez has not publicly addressed the allegations, while Sanchez has dismissed them as baseless and politically driven. In April, the Socialist leader briefly considered stepping down but ultimately chose to remain in office. This situation marks the first time since 2017 that a sitting Spanish prime minister has been summoned to testify in a judicial case, with the last instance being Mariano Rajoy in a corruption case linked to his conservative People’s Party.
