
In a tragic development, Samson Omoarebokhae, a Senior Special Assistant to the Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, has been killed by gunmen. This incident comes just weeks ahead of the Edo State governorship election, slated for September 21, 2024, though it remains unclear if the assassination is linked to the upcoming polls.
The news was confirmed in a statement released by Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, the Special Adviser on Media to the Speaker. According to the statement, Omoarebokhae was ambushed and killed on August 31, while traveling from Ozalla to Uhumora in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Following the tragic event, a delegation was sent by the Speaker’s office to extend condolences to the bereaved family. The Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Odion Iruobe, who led the delegation, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow not only to the Assembly and the PDP but also to the people of Owan West Local Government. “Though this is a painful situation, we pray to God in His infinite power to give the family a reason to smile again,” Iruobe added.
The statement also conveyed prayers for the repose of Omoarebokhae’s soul and for strength to be granted to his family during this difficult time.
Elijah Omoarebokhai, the deceased’s brother, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family for the Speaker’s support and the delegation’s visit during their time of grief.
When contacted for comment, Edo State police spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor mentioned that he could not confirm the incident as he was away on a course and not present in the state at the time of the report.
