In Kano State, approximately 523 students attending Government Junior Secondary School, Karfi, located in the Takai Local Government Area, are reportedly being compelled to share classrooms with animals because of the deteriorating infrastructure.
Recent strong winds have exacerbated the situation, tearing off roofs from several classrooms and rendering them unsafe and unsuitable for learning. The damaged structures not only disrupt educational activities but also endanger the safety and well-being of the students.
Disturbing images shared by Monitng, a well-known civic tech platform, on X (formerly Twitter), depict the dire conditions of the school. These photos show animals wandering freely in classrooms, coexisting with hundreds of students who are struggling to learn in these unacceptable conditions.
Monitng raised the alarm, tweeting: “SHOCKING!! Dear Gov @Kyusufabba. This is the DILAPIDATED state of Government Junior Sec School, Karfi, Takai LGA, Kano State, where students share a classroom with animals. Over 523 students are forced to learn in this deplorable condition after strong winds blew off the roof.”
The situation in Kano is part of a broader crisis in Nigeria’s educational system, where an alarming 18 million children are currently out of school, and countless others are at risk of dropping out. Across the country, many schools suffer from dilapidated classrooms and a lack of essential resources.
A recent incident further highlights the gravity of the problem. Last month, SaharaReporters revealed that 96 pupils at LEA Primary School in Kigbe, Abuja, were forced to sit on the floor during lessons due to a lack of adequate seating.
Monitng also exposed this situation in Abuja, calling for urgent intervention from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Senator Ireti Kingibe. The group’s post stated: “Dear @GovWike & @IretiKingibe Inside Abuja School Where Pupils Sit On Bare Floor. A local authority school located in LEA Primary School Kigbe community Kwali Area Council FCT Abuja. Where over 96 pupils sit on bare floors in their classrooms to learn.”
