The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an enhanced deployment of human and technical resources to the Benue State Police Command, aiming to ensure the swift rescue of more than 20 medical and dental students who were recently abducted. This directive follows the disturbing incident where students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, along with a House Officer, were kidnapped by gunmen while en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu.
The attack occurred around 5:30 pm in the Otukpo area of Benue State, leading to widespread concerns for the safety of the victims. The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident early Friday morning. One of the abducted individuals has been identified as Dr. Louis, a House Officer. The kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N50 million for their release.
In response, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi released a statement on Saturday condemning the kidnapping. Egbetokun described the act as “reprehensible and callous.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe return of the students and stated that additional tactical units, helicopters, drones, and specialized vehicles have been mobilized to aid the rescue operation.
Egbetokun assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to protecting the lives of all Nigerians and will not relent in its efforts to combat crime, particularly kidnapping. He also called on the public to provide any information that might assist in the rescue operation. Individuals with relevant details are urged to contact the nearest police station or the state’s command control number.
The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to maintaining peace, stability, and the rule of law across the country, and it will continue to work diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.
