A photojournalist with Daily Independent, Jide Oyekunle, was arrested by the police while covering the #EndBadGovernance protest at Eagle Square in Abuja on Thursday.

Police personnel fired teargas at several demonstrators in Nigeria’s capital during the protests over the country’s worsening economic situation.

The arrest of Jide Oyekunle, who is the Correspondence Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, FCT Chapel, was ordered by the Police Commissioner, Ben Igweh, when he arrived at the venue of the protest.

However, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, told SaharaReporters that Jide was with her and not arrested as claimed.

Meanwhile, Jide told SaharaReporters that the FCT commissioner ordered his arrest but later released him. “The FCT commissioner ordered my arrest, but later released me,” he said.
