Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has publicly endorsed the nationwide protest set to begin on August 1, 2024. He pledged support for peaceful demonstrators and committed to personally welcoming them at the Government House on Thursday.
During a stakeholdersā meeting at the Government House on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf emphasized that protesting is a fundamental democratic right. He encouraged demonstrators to proceed with caution, noting concerns about potential disruptions by criminal elements. He assured that if the protest remains peaceful, he would greet the participants and expressed his willingness to join them.
Attacks the Kano State Police
āI canāt understand why the security agencies, particularly the police, are not following our directives,ā he said. āWhen we issue instructions, they often claim theyāve received orders from āabove.ā Who is this āaboveā? I am the chief security officer of the state. If you disagree with that, you should go and amend the Nigerian constitution.ā
As the protest approaches, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has also spoken out, urging the government to implement effective measures to alleviate the economic hardships faced by the populace. āWe must find proper ways to support those in need and ensure that aid reaches them,ā the Emir stated during a meeting.
