The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, confirmed the details in a statement released on Friday, June 14. Ogungbemide reported that preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
“A total of 25 people were involved in the accident, including 13 male adults, five female adults, two female children, and five male children,” Ogungbemide explained. “Of these, five people sustained injuries, comprising three male adults and two female adults. Tragically, 19 people were killed, including 11 male adults, three female adults, three male children, and two female children. The injured victims were taken to Orisun Ayo Hospital for treatment. One corpse was deposited at the hospital morgue, while the families of the other 18 deceased victims claimed their bodies.”
Expressing concern over the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed condemned the reckless behavior of drivers who frequently violate traffic regulations, causing significant loss of life and property. “In line with his 2024 agenda to drastically reduce road carnage, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers to intensify special patrol operations targeting these identified violations,” Ogungbemide added.
