The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced that troops have detained over 100 suspects following a deadly attack on a military checkpoint in Abia State, which resulted in the deaths of five service personnel.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement on Thursday, June 13. He stated that preliminary investigations have led to the release of individuals found not to be involved in the attack.
In a broader context, Major General Buba disclosed that nine soldiers were killed by non-state actors across the country in June. While he did not specify the exact number of suspects currently in custody, he emphasized that those detained are providing valuable assistance to the military’s ongoing operations.
The tragic incident at the Obikabia Junction checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba metropolis in Abia State, occurred on May 30, 2024. The military high command confirmed that the attack claimed the lives of five soldiers and six civilians, promising a severe retaliation.
Two weeks following the attack, General Buba informed the press that troops have executed numerous intelligence-based operations. These operations have led to the discovery and destruction of several terrorist camps in the region, including a significant camp in Igboro Forest, Arochukwu LGA of Abia State.
“Several arrests were made during these raids, and those found culpable remain in detention,” General Buba explained. “These raids and arrests have significant intelligence value. The detained individuals are aiding troops in locating other terrorist camps, sleeper cells, and high-profile individuals associated with the terrorist group’s activities.”
