Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are expected to visit Nigeria in May for talks on the Invictus Games, which he established to facilitate the rehabilitation of wounded and sick servicemembers and veterans.

The Defence Headquarters, in an official statement released on Sunday, conveyed its “honour and delight” at the acceptance of the invitation extended to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, His Royal Highness Prince Harry and Meghan, to visit Nigeria in May 2024. Signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, the statement outlined the agenda for their visit, which includes meetings with service members and participation in various cultural activities.

The statement highlighted Prince Harry’s role as the founder of the Invictus Games, an international multi-sporting event aimed at providing a recovery pathway for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel worldwide. With approximately 500 participants from 21 nations, including Nigeria, the Invictus Games not only facilitates rehabilitation but also raises awareness and recognition for soldiers in society. Nigeria’s commendable performance at the previous edition, securing Gold and Bronze medals, underscores the country’s commitment to the event.

The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aims to strengthen Nigeria’s presence at the Invictus Games and explore the possibility of hosting the event in the future. The Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, who attended last year’s event in Germany, has pledged Nigeria’s readiness to host the games when the opportunity arises. This announcement reflects Nigeria’s enthusiasm for international sporting events and its dedication to supporting the rehabilitation and recognition of wounded service personnel.
