Top sources informed this newspaper that Adegbenro was arrested and detained in Abuja on Friday night, saying his arrest was sequel to a result of an “extensive investigation into the alleged illegal fraudulent activities, impersonation of government officials and involvement in gun-running.

Members of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) of the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended Adejare Adegbenro, the Director-General of the National Commission against the Proliferation of Arms, Light Weapons and Pipeline Vandalism (NATCOM), for alleged fraudulent activities, according to SaharaReporters.

Sources revealed that Adegbenro was arrested and detained in Abuja on Friday night following an extensive investigation into alleged illegal fraudulent activities, impersonation of government officials, and involvement in gun-running.

Allegations suggest that Adegbenro and his associates operated a sophisticated scam operation, offering fake employment opportunities within NATCOM and extorting money from unsuspecting individuals. Victims recounted being deceived with promises of lucrative positions and job security within the organization, resulting in significant financial losses.

Investigations also uncovered evidence linking Adegbenro to gun-running activities, shedding light on NATCOM’s alleged criminal operations spanning several years.

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), the recognized government institution tasked with controlling the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons in Nigeria, warned about the dangers posed by NATCOM and similar fraudulent groups.

In a statement, the NCCSALW emphasized the importance of verifying the legitimacy of organizations claiming to be involved in arms control and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.

The arrest of Adegbenro is seen as a significant step in combating illegal arms proliferation, gun-running, and fraudulent activities. The ongoing investigation is expected to reveal further details about NATCOM’s operations and individuals involved in the crimes, aiming to create a safer society by addressing these threats.
