The Lagos State command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has made clarifications on the status of the controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky in its facility.
The Lagos State command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has provided clarity regarding the status of the controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, in its facility.
Contrary to reports from a news platform alleging that Bobrisky occupied a newly built VIP apartment in the Kirikiri correctional center, the NCoS, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Rotimi Oladokun, on Saturday, refuted such claims.
Oladokun clarified that Bobrisky shares the same cell with other convicted inmates and emphasized that there are no en-suite or “one-bedroom flat” style cells in the Custodial Centre. He explained that the cell block infrastructure is designed as shared buildings to accommodate multiple inmates.
The statement highlighted that Bobrisky, currently serving a six-month prison sentence for abuse and mutilation of the Naira note, is entitled to reformative and rehabilitative platforms, including educational and vocational training, provided to all inmates in custody.
Furthermore, Oladokun stated that Bobrisky was remanded in a male Custodial Centre, where he adhered to all regulations and rules, especially concerning the dress code. Bobrisky wears male-designated correctional clothing for convicted inmates, and he receives no special amenities or privileges.
The statement also mentioned that all inmates, including Bobrisky, are entitled to family and legal visits, which are monitored and regulated by the NCoS.
Additionally, a source within the correctional center affirmed that Bobrisky received equal treatment to other inmates and underwent examination upon admission, which revealed no realignment of gender or genital organs.
Bobrisky’s arrest and detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stemmed from a video report showing him spraying new naira notes at a movie premiere in Lagos. He pleaded guilty to charges of naira abuse and was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024.
