A Registered Nurse at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State, Fiyinfoluwa Abodunrin, has accused the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Bunmi Fatungase, of orchestrating two years of bullying, intimidation, mental health manipulation and victimisation against her.
Abodunrin alleged that her ordeal involved the CMD, the Acting Director of Nursing Services, identified as Fawole, and other hospital officials, whom she accused of conspiring to intimidate her, interfere with her medical records, withhold her entitlements and threaten her personal safety.
The allegations were contained in a detailed account made available through the Nurses Forum, which has also petitioned the police over the matter.
The controversy has escalated following allegations by the Forum that Fatungase and some individuals allegedly attempted to compromise an ongoing police investigation by offering the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command ₦2 million.
Abodunrin traced the escalation of her confrontation with the hospital management to January 2026, following a reported incident involving the humiliation of nurses at the hospital.
According to her, the incident occurred at the Labour Ward, whereas she was working at the Paediatric Surgical Ward. However, she alleged that the CMD accused her of being the whistleblower who reported the incident.
She said she was subsequently summoned from home on her day off during the Joint Health Sector Unions strike to appear before the hospital management.
Abodunrin alleged that the Acting Director of Nursing Services compelled her to meet with a professor in the hospital’s Mental Health Department, Professor Ogunsemi, who subsequently informed her that he had found no evidence of any mental health disorder.
However, she claimed the professor disclosed that he had been directed by the CMD to prepare documentation against her mental health.
“I was invited from home on my day off during the JOHESU strike to see the management. The acting DNS forced me and led me to the Prof of Mental Department, Prof Ogunsemi. He engaged me in discussion in their absence and told me, ‘I’ve not found any pathology in you but I was ordered by the CMD to write a documentation against your mental health,'” she stated.
Following the incident, Abodunrin said she underwent a mental health assessment ordered by the Ogun State Commissioner for Health.
She alleged that the assessment raised concerns about how the hospital management was handling her mental health, resulting in her withdrawal from the teaching hospital.
The nurse also raised concerns over the alleged disappearance of her medical records, particularly her case notes containing details of an asthma diagnosis and treatment prescribed in June 2024.
According to her, the case notes went missing after she suffered a second asthma attack within the same month, despite having been diagnosed with exacerbated asthma and prescribed inhalers.
“My case notes have been missing since June 2024. My Head of Unit then colluded with the medical team to change my diagnosis. When I spoke with the CMD about the missing case notes on June 20, 2025, she invited me for interrogation. Later, a medical record officer told me to forget about it since there is an Electronic Medical Record (EMR),” she alleged.
Abodunrin further accused the CMD of using her withheld salary and other employment entitlements to pressure her into reversing the medical withdrawal document issued through the Ministry of Health.
She claimed that an enquiry at the office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Health established that her salary was being processed and sent monthly, with corresponding payslips indicating that she had received the payments, despite her insistence that no money had entered her account.
According to her, the CMD allegedly told her that she would neither receive a response to her complaints nor have her employment rights addressed until she agreed to cooperate in reversing the withdrawal document.
“The CMD said she won’t respond to me nor grant me my rights until I collude with her to reverse the withdrawal document. She said I should register at any government hospital for consultations consistently for five days, and she will link with the doctor to tell them what to document for me to reverse the letter,” Abodunrin alleged.
The nurse also claimed that she had been subjected to surveillance, intimidation and threats to her life, alleging that a hospital staff member was sent to obtain her residential address, her boyfriend’s telephone number and his workplace.
She further alleged that she had been followed to different locations and that attempts had been made to break into her apartment.
Abodunrin identified July 9, 2025, as the date of the first alleged assassination threat, adding that the situation had subsequently deteriorated into what she described as repeated attempts to forcefully gain access to her residence.
She also accused individuals allegedly connected to the hospital management of being involved in the threats, claiming that her landlady had verbally disclosed aspects of an alleged conspiracy in July and August 2026.
“The security threats have been too cumbersome, even to my doorstep. The first assassination threat was on July 9, 2025. Now, there is a break-in and conspiracy with the hospital management,” she stated.
She further narrated an alleged incident on October 3, 2026, when a person she described as the first visitor connected to an assassination attempt was reportedly seen coming out of the room of the most recent tenant in the building.
According to her, since the tenant moved out, her apartment door had been broken several times, with repeated attempts to forcefully gain entry into her self-contained apartment.
The nurse also traced what she described as the beginning of her mental health persecution to her time at the Ogun State College of Nursing Science, Ilaro, where she accused her former class coordinator, Mrs. Ojumu, of repeatedly threatening her.
Abodunrin alleged that Ojumu threatened to use her professional knowledge as a mental health nurse to make her mentally unstable.
“Mrs. Ojumu said to me in class, ‘I’m a mental health nurse, I can help an individual health from mental disorders and also do otherwise. I will make sure I make you mad, I know what to do,'” she recounted.
She further alleged that the lecturer repeatedly asked other students about symptoms of schizophrenia whenever she passed by, claiming that the experience subjected her to prolonged emotional distress while she was still a nursing student.
Amid the allegations, Abodunrin, through the Nurses Forum, submitted a formal petition to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, raising complaints bordering on alleged unauthorised salary deductions, diversion of funds, manipulation of medical records and other forms of victimisation.
The petition was reportedly approved, following which the nurse was invited to make a statement to the police.
However, the Nurses Forum subsequently raised concerns over an alleged attempt by the hospital’s CMD and other individuals to influence the investigation through the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command.
In a letter titled, “Alleged Attempt To Compromise Police Investigation Into Complaints Against The CMD Of OOUTH, Including Alleged Bribery Of The Police Public Relations Officer,” the Forum alleged that the CMD and some individuals visited the police spokesperson on Monday, a day before Abodunrin was scheduled to give her statement.
The Forum claimed that information available to it indicated that the visitors arrived in a Toyota Corolla allegedly belonging to the CMD’s husband.
It further alleged that the individuals offered the police spokesperson ₦2 million to influence or manipulate the handling of the nurse’s petition.
“We received disturbing information that the CMD and some other individuals had reportedly visited the Police Public Relations Officer on Monday, a day before the complainant was scheduled to make her statement,” the letter stated.
“According to information received… the visitors allegedly arrived in a Toyota Corolla said to belong to the husband of the CMD. Our sources further alleged that an offer of ₦2 million was made to the PPRO to influence or manipulate the handling of the matter.”
The Forum also alleged that when Abodunrin visited the PPRO’s office on Tuesday to make her statement, she was discouraged from pursuing the complaint.
According to the group, the officer allegedly appeared defensive of the CMD rather than providing an impartial avenue for the nurse to present her allegations.
The Forum said one of the issues Abodunrin reportedly raised during the meeting concerned the alleged pressure from the CMD to manipulate her mental health assessment and evaluation, which she said had previously been conducted under the supervision of the Ogun State Ministry of Health.
The group expressed concern that the alleged visit and financial inducement could undermine the credibility of the investigation and prevent the nurse from obtaining justice.
Consequently, it called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and other relevant authorities to investigate the alleged visit by the CMD and her associates to the police spokesperson.
The Forum specifically demanded an investigation into the alleged ₦2 million bribe offer, the identities of those who visited the police spokesperson, the purpose of their visit and the circumstances surrounding the use of the Toyota Corolla.
It also urged the police authorities to investigate the conduct of the PPRO and establish whether he acted professionally, impartially and within the limits of his responsibilities.
The group further demanded protection for Abodunrin against alleged intimidation and victimisation, insisting that the investigation should be transferred to an independent police team if necessary to prevent any actual or perceived conflict of interest.
It also called for the preservation of all relevant medical records, financial documents and other evidence connected to the petition to prevent possible alteration or destruction.
Beyond the alleged bribery attempt, the Forum urged the authorities to investigate the original complaints against the teaching hospital’s CMD without allowing any individual to manipulate or frustrate the process.
“We are therefore calling on the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, and other relevant authorities to investigate the allegation that ₦2 million was offered to the PPRO to influence the handling of Nurse Abodunrin’s petition,” the letter read.
The Forum also appealed to the media, civil society organisations, human rights advocates and members of the public to monitor the development and ensure that the nurse’s allegations receive appropriate attention.
“Nurse Abodunrin deserves justice. She deserves to be heard. She deserves protection, not intimidation. Justice must not be negotiated. Public institutions must not become private protection agencies for powerful individuals,” the group stated.
When contacted for comments on the allegations against the hospital management, OOUTH Public Relations Officer, Nurse Ajewole, declined to provide an immediate response.
Ajewole requested additional time to obtain information about the matter, promising to speak on it by Friday.
“If you can give me till Friday, then call back I will be able to get information on the matter and speak to you, but for now, I don’t have anything to tell you,” Ajewole said.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Ogun State Police Command were also unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babseyi, neither answered calls placed to him nor responded to a text message seeking clarification on the alleged ₦2 million bribe offer.
The allegations against the OOUTH CMD and the police spokesperson had therefore not received an official response from the hospital management or the Ogun State Police Command at the time of filing this report.
