Omoyele Sowore has done more for Nigerian students than many who parade themselves today as student leaders.
From the days of military dictatorship to this era of democracy without dividends, Sowore stood on the frontline. He fought for better hostels, against arbitrary fee hikes, for better funding for education, and for the right of students to have a voice. Many of the freedoms NANS enjoys today were watered by the sacrifices of Sowore and his generation.
So why does the leadership of NANS today harbour so much hatred for the same man?
The answer is simple: Sowore is against their corruption. Sowore is against their illegality.
Sowore has consistently said what every honest Nigerian student knows: NANS should be led by students, not by graduates. How can someone who graduated 5, 7, 10 years ago still claim to be a student holding student positions and deciding for them against their wishes? How can you be 35, 40 years old, working in Government Houses, driving convoys, and still be holding positions in the NANS just to help the Government master their nepotistic plans against the Nigerian students.
Some of these NANS officials move from one Senator’s/Minister’s offices to the other giving them awards that they never worked for, in their bedrooms just to have financial stipends to enrich themselves.
Except Nigeria surrenders it self to bitter truth, greedy politicians will continue to rubbish our collective efforts to savage this country. Today’s NANS leadership is never supposed to be recommended as a student body because they are bunch of APC political thugs. Most of them are no longer in school.
We must expose these systemic rot now before it consumes us. It’s SOWORE today, it may be you tomorrow.
Let’s change the narratives now.
