An urgent appeal has been made to the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Kasim Mohammed Ikwa, over the alleged absence of a perimeter fence at Old Kutunku Primary School, with concerns raised about the safety of pupils and staff.

The appeal, made by Adeoye Adekunle Yusuf, popularly known as Omo Oba of Gwas, followed a report he said he received concerning an incident during the pupils’ break period in which a cow allegedly came dangerously close to some students within the school premises.

According to Yusuf, the absence of a perimeter fence leaves the school vulnerable to unrestricted access by animals, motorcycles and other members of the public, potentially exposing pupils and teachers to avoidable risks.

He further alleged that the reported incident was not the first safety concern linked to the lack of fencing at the school.

Yusuf said that during the last Inter-House Sports programme, a motorcycle reportedly gained access to the school premises and allegedly hit a member of staff.

The youth advocate described the situation as a matter requiring urgent attention, stressing that schools should provide a safe and controlled environment for children and teachers.

He appealed to Chairman Kasim Mohammed to urgently visit or assess the situation at Old Kutunku Primary School and consider the provision of a perimeter fence as part of measures to improve security and safety within the school.

“Our children should not be exposed to unnecessary danger simply because their school lacks basic security infrastructure,” Yusuf said in his appeal.

He also stressed that the appeal was not intended merely as criticism of the Area Council, noting that youths advocating for the development of Old Kutunku were prepared to contribute their own quota towards finding solutions to challenges affecting the community.

According to him, the group would continue to raise awareness, engage relevant authorities and individuals, and support genuine efforts aimed at improving the condition of the school.

“We are not here only to complain; we are ready to contribute our own quota to finding solutions,” he stated.

Yusuf maintained that the safety of pupils and teachers should remain a priority, urging the Area Council administration to act before the reported risks result in a more serious incident.

The appeal comes amid broader calls from communities across the Area Council for increased attention to basic educational infrastructure, particularly facilities that directly affect the safety and welfare of schoolchildren.

For residents and advocates of Old Kutunku, the demand is straightforward: provide the school with adequate perimeter protection and ensure that pupils can learn without the threat of uncontrolled access by animals, motorcycles or unauthorised persons.

The community is now looking to the Gwagwalada Area Council administration, under Chairman Kasim Mohammed Ikwa, for an urgent response to the concerns raised over Old Kutunku Primary School.
