The convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, was reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs on Tuesday along the Airport-Boko Road in Benue State, with the attackers allegedly warning the former Anambra State governor against entering the state.
A post circulating online claimed that the incident occurred as Obi travelled towards Benue as part of his ongoing political engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the claim, the suspected political thugs allegedly confronted or attacked members of Obi’s convoy and warned that the former Anambra governor must not enter Benue State.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged incident remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, and there was no immediate official confirmation from the police, Benue State Government or other security agencies concerning the reported attack.
The allegation has nevertheless raised concerns about the safety of political candidates, supporters and other participants in the electoral process as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
The report also called on the Federal Government and Benue State Government to intervene and ensure that political leaders and their supporters are able to move freely and participate in lawful political activities without intimidation, threats or violence.
The alleged attack came shortly after Obi visited parts of Benue State during a wider political tour covering Kogi, Benue and Enugu states.
During the tour, Obi stopped in Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, where he interacted with residents and traders along the route.
The NDC presidential candidate reportedly listened to concerns from residents, particularly over insecurity, unemployment, healthcare and education.
Obi also urged Nigerians and his supporters to remain actively involved in the democratic process and work towards protecting their votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reported incident comes at a time when Benue continues to face serious security challenges, with several communities affected by killings, abductions and destruction of property in recent months.
The persistent violence in parts of the state has heightened concerns over the safety of residents and visitors, while political activities are expected to increase considerably as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Obi has previously condemned the violence in Benue and called on governments and security agencies to take stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives.
In August, Obi described attacks in Benue, Plateau and Niger states as a national security emergency, urging authorities to improve intelligence gathering, strengthen rapid-response operations and ensure that those responsible for attacks are arrested and prosecuted.
The latest allegation could further fuel concerns over political violence and intimidation as political parties, candidates and supporters begin increased mobilisation across the country.
The incident also raises questions about whether political differences are beginning to translate into attempts to restrict the movement of opposition candidates and prevent them from engaging directly with voters.
However, the claim remains an allegation pending confirmation by the relevant authorities.
Security agencies are expected to establish what happened on the Airport-Boko Road, identify those allegedly involved and determine whether the incident was politically motivated or connected to an attempt to prevent Obi from entering or moving through Benue State.
The outcome of any investigation will be closely watched, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
