A farmer identified as Hammasumo Ali has lost his left hand after a herdsman attacked him with a machete during a confrontation over cattle grazing in Nyashika, Gumti Ward, Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The incident occurred while Ali was carrying out farming activities in the community.

According to a statement issued by Daniel Pogu Toungo, Secretary of Information of Toungo Local Government Area, and seen by Daily Post, the confrontation started after Ali attempted to prevent a herdsman from allowing his cattle to enter his farm to graze.

The farmer’s intervention reportedly led to an argument between him and the herdsman, which later escalated into a physical confrontation.

During the confrontation, the herdsman attacked Ali with a machete, inflicting severe injuries to his left hand.

The injuries were so severe that Ali ultimately lost the hand.

Ali is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, according to the statement.

Following the incident, the Chairman of Toungo Local Government Area, Hajiya Hauwa Guruja, visited the injured farmer at the hospital and expressed sympathy over his condition.

The attack has renewed concerns over the persistent tensions between farmers and herders in rural communities, particularly disputes involving farmland, cattle grazing and access to natural resources.

Farmer-herder disputes have remained a recurring source of violence in several parts of northern Nigeria, with confrontations sometimes resulting in deaths, serious injuries and destruction of property.

The latest incident in Toungo has further highlighted the dangers faced by farmers and the need for stronger measures to prevent disputes over grazing and farmland from escalating into violent attacks.

Community leaders and relevant authorities are expected to intensify efforts to maintain peace and address recurring conflicts between farming and herding communities in the area.
