At least seven people have reportedly been killed and scores injured after an escort vehicle belonging to the Nigerian Army allegedly ran into traders and bystanders at the busy Peva Market in Chanchanji Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident, which has sparked outrage and concern among residents, reportedly occurred when the military escort vehicle lost control and suddenly ploughed into traders and other people at the market.

Sources familiar with the incident alleged that some members of the military escort team had become intoxicated while at the market shortly before the crash.

The allegation, however, has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether intoxication directly contributed to the vehicle losing control.

The vehicle reportedly moved into the crowded market area, hitting traders and unsuspecting bystanders and leaving a trail of casualties.

At least seven people were reportedly killed in the incident, while scores of others sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The injured victims were said to have been rushed to nearby hospitals and medical facilities, where they were receiving emergency treatment.

The incident has generated serious questions over the circumstances surrounding the movement and operation of the Army vehicle in the crowded market, as well as allegations concerning the conduct of members of the escort team.

Residents and eyewitnesses are reportedly demanding answers over what caused the vehicle to lose control and whether proper safety measures were observed by the military personnel involved.

One source said, “The incident allegedly occurred after members of the escort team became intoxicated at the market.”

The allegation has intensified concerns over whether negligence, reckless conduct or other factors may have contributed to the tragedy. However, no official finding has established that intoxication was responsible for the crash.

The identities of the deceased victims had not been fully made public as of the time of filing this report, while the exact number and condition of those injured remained unclear.

The incident comes amid broader concerns over civilian safety and accountability whenever security personnel and military vehicles operate around densely populated areas.

There was no immediate official explanation from the Nigerian Army regarding the reported crash, the alleged intoxication of members of the escort team or the number of casualties.

Attempts by Chronicles Reporters to obtain the Army’s reaction were unsuccessful. Calls placed to the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele, were not answered, while a message sent to her line had also not received a response as of press time.

The Nigerian Army is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether an investigation has been launched into the reported deaths and injuries.

Chronicles Reporters will continue to follow developments, including any official confirmation of the casualties, the condition of the injured victims and possible disciplinary or investigative action arising from the incident.
