The African Action Congress (AAC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has demanded a police and Department of State Services (DSS) investigation into Kuje Area Council Chairman, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, over remarks in which he allegedly threatened to expel residents who do not support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demand followed the circulation of a video purportedly showing Shekwolo making the controversial remarks.
In the video, the council chairman was heard declaring: “Is either you’re doing APC or leave the Area Council. I am not hiding it at all at all, with confidence, I am saying it.”
He further said: “You know why: I cannot have the Minister and the President doing for us what they’re doing, and on the day of the election you said you want to match me; I will not agree. Is either you’re with us, or you leave.”
The comments have triggered concerns over political intimidation, freedom of political association and the safety of residents as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, and signed by its FCT Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, the AAC described the remarks as “idiotic, reckless, barbaric, and dangerous.”
The party accused Shekwolo of behaving like a dictator and attempting to use his position as an elected public official to intimidate residents over their political choices.
“Let us be blunt. That statement is idiotic, reckless, barbaric, and dangerous. It is the language of a local dictator. It is the language of someone who thinks public office is a license to act like a cult leader,” the AAC said.
The opposition party warned the council chairman that Kuje Area Council was not his personal property and that public office did not confer ownership over the people he was elected to serve.
“Mr. Samuel, hear this: Kuje Area Council is not your father’s compound. Kuje is Nigerian territory. You did not buy Kuje. You did not build Kuje. You were voted in to manage resources, not to own human beings,” the party said.
The AAC also expressed alarm over Shekwolo’s alleged threat to “trace people to their houses,” arguing that the statement could amount to an indication of plans to intimidate or target residents perceived to support opposition parties.
“Your threat to ‘trace people to their houses’ is nothing but a confession that you plan to use thugs and state machinery to intimidate voters. That is the definition of electoral terrorism. And we will not allow it,” the party alleged.
The party further accused Shekwolo of deriving political confidence from his alleged relationship with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other APC leaders.
“We know where you are getting this false confidence from. You are speaking the script written for you by your foolish godfathers, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and other APC drunkards,” the AAC alleged.
The AAC also accused the chairman of moving from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC after allegedly identifying greater political opportunities within the ruling party.
According to the opposition party, Shekwolo’s alleged conduct suggested a belief that membership of the ruling party could place him beyond accountability.
The AAC rejected such a notion, insisting that political affiliation could not override the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens.
“Nobody is above the law in a democracy. Not you, not Wike, not even the President,” the party said.
“The same Constitution you swore to uphold guarantees every Nigerian the right to belong to any party, or to belong to no party at all.”
The party also drew attention to election-related violence in Osun State, alleging that more than 50 Nigerians had been killed in political violence, and warned that similar tensions must not be allowed to spread to Kuje or the wider FCT.
“You want to import that Osun template to Kuje? To Abuja? It will not work! The people of FCT are awake. We have buried too many people already. We will not bury more because one power-drunk chairman wants to please his masters,” the AAC said.
The opposition party vowed to resist any attempt to intimidate voters or suppress opposition activities ahead of the 2027 polls.
“We will never be silenced. We will never ‘lie low’ while you practice criminal politics,” it said.
The AAC further warned Shekwolo and persons it described as APC thugs against attempting to use violence to suppress opposition supporters.
“We are ready. Come to any level you want. Kuje is not your personal territory. FCT is not Wike’s private business. Try your nonsense, and you will meet the iron will of the people,” the party declared.
The party demanded that every resident of Kuje and the FCT be allowed to participate in elections freely and vote according to their political preference without threats, coercion or violence.
It also called on the Nigerian Police Force, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to investigate the alleged threat and take appropriate action.
“We are putting the Nigerian Police Force, the DSS, the Civil Defence, and all security agencies on notice. This video is evidence. Act now. Arrest and prosecute this man before he turns Kuje into a killing field,” the AAC said.
The party also appealed to the international community, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the European Union, and the diplomatic missions of the United States and United Kingdom in Abuja, to monitor political developments in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This is how it starts. Document these threats. When 2027 comes, and blood flows, the world must know who incited it,” the party warned.
The AAC demanded that Shekwolo withdraw the alleged statement and apologise to Kuje residents or resign from office.
“Mr. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, know this: you are not a leader. You are a danger. You are an embarrassment to governance. Withdraw that statement, apologize to the people of Kuje, or resign,” the party said.
The AAC reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic participation and the rights of residents across the FCT, declaring that no elected official should determine how citizens exercise their constitutional right to political association and voting.
“Kuje belongs to Nigerians. Abuja belongs to Nigerians. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” the party said.
