Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a stunning quarter-final defeat on Sunday, falling 1–0 to arch-rivals Cameroon in a result that brought their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence to a premature and painful end.
The defeat was more than just an elimination from the continental championship. It also cost Nigeria the chance to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Indomitable Lionesses seized their opportunity, while Nigeria failed to produce the attacking spark required to rescue their campaign.
For the defending champions, the defeat represents a dramatic fall from the heights of continental glory to a fight for survival on the road to Brazil.
Nigeria’s pursuit of an 11th WAFCON crown is now over.
But the bigger battle remains.
The Super Falcons must regroup quickly, rediscover their confidence and navigate the play-off route, with their place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup now hanging precariously in the balance.
