The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has called for an independent, transparent and professionally conducted investigation into the controversial death of Mary Habila, insisting that justice must be guided by evidence, due process and accountability rather than speculation or influence.

The rights organisation stressed that while no individual should be condemned in the court of public opinion without credible evidence, no public official or influential figure should be shielded from lawful investigation.

RULAAC noted that public concerns surrounding the case underscore the need for investigators to conduct a thorough forensic inquiry capable of establishing the true circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.

According to the organisation, the credibility of the investigation will ultimately depend on its independence, transparency, scientific rigour and strict adherence to due process.

“The available facts should not be interpreted as suggesting criminal responsibility or wrongdoing on the part of any individual,” the group stated, adding that justice demands fairness for all parties involved.

It urged the Nigeria Police Force to respond factually to issues raised by the public and continue providing regular updates as the investigation progresses to maintain public confidence.

RULAAC further argued that the death of a young Nigerian under circumstances that remain unclear deserves nothing less than a comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigation capable of uncovering the truth, ensuring justice where necessary and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

The call follows growing public attention over Habila’s death after reports indicated that the incident occurred at a residence linked to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in his country home in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

Umahi has denied any involvement in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and has publicly supported calls for a comprehensive forensic autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.

The Nigeria Police Force has also confirmed that an investigation is underway, urging the public to avoid speculation while detectives conclude their inquiries.

Police authorities maintained that, as of the latest update, no criminal charges have been filed against any individual in connection with the case, while investigations remain ongoing.
