In a disturbing turn of events, the scheduled Thanksgiving service honoring Rep. Sesoo Gboko Ikpagher was marred by a coordinated operation allegedly orchestrated by Governor Alia’s administration.

On the morning of May 11, 2024, security forces, including personnel from the Nigeria Army, police, civil defense corps, and livestock guards, converged on the Annunciation Rectory in Tsuwe-Daka, Benue State, under directives from the Benue State government.

According to eyewitnesses, the blockade was initiated by Philip Achua, the Caretaker Chairman of Konshisha LGA, who claimed the service was aimed at insulting the governor. Roads leading to Tsuwe-Daka were sealed off, and congregants were barred from entering the church, facing threats from armed security personnel. The situation escalated when Mr. Toryila Saakaan Nomyugh, the Church Chairman, was publicly insulted by the caretaker chairman.

Despite the joyful reception of Rep. Ikpagher upon his arrival, the caretaker chairman refused to permit the service to proceed, citing lack of communication regarding the event. In response, Rep. Ikpagher challenged the chairman’s authority, emphasizing the right to worship without permission from local government officials.

As tensions flared, Commissioner Aondowase Kunde allegedly assaulted Rep. Ikpagher with a heavy block, prompting a violent retaliation from the chairman’s supporters. Rep. Ikpagher and his entourage were forced to flee amid gunfire from security operatives, while several of his supporters, including Mr. Mofa Nyiyongo and others, were arrested and detained by the police.

The incident has sparked outrage among concerned Shangev-Tiev youths, who decry the infringement on their right to worship and the use of excessive force against Rep. Ikpagher and his supporters. Signed, Concerned Shangev-Tiev Youths.
