Peter Obi has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what he described as a “monumental failure in governance,” accusing the administration of plunging millions of Nigerians into deeper hardship amid worsening insecurity, rising inflation, economic instability and declining public confidence in government.
Obi, in a strongly worded statement, argued that the current state of the nation reflects a profound failure of leadership and accountability, insisting that Nigeria is facing one of its most difficult periods despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government that its reforms are yielding results.
According to Obi, mature democracies are strengthened when leaders acknowledge policy failures and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions rather than shifting blame or making excuses.
Drawing comparisons with Nigeria’s political history, Obi recalled that before the 2015 general elections, Tinubu repeatedly demanded the resignation of then-President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity, economic hardship and the government’s handling of national crises.
He specifically referenced Tinubu’s criticism of the Jonathan administration following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, noting that the current president had argued at the time that government had failed in its primary constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives and property of citizens.
Obi stated that the same standards Tinubu applied to Jonathan should now be applied to his own administration.
The former Anambra State governor also pointed to promises Tinubu made during the 2023 presidential campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, strengthen national security, fight corruption, grow the economy and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
According to Obi, Tinubu had publicly challenged Nigerians not to support him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those promises.
However, Obi said the realities confronting Nigerians today stand in sharp contrast to those pledges.
He lamented the continued collapse of purchasing power, soaring food prices, increasing public debt, persistent power outages, unemployment and the growing insecurity that has left many communities vulnerable to attacks, kidnappings and criminal violence.
While government officials continue to defend ongoing economic reforms, Obi questioned why millions of Nigerians have seen their living conditions deteriorate despite official claims of progress and rising revenue.
“I join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi declared.
According to him, such a move would help institutionalise a culture of accountability in Nigerian politics and reinforce the principle that public office is a sacred trust that must be exercised responsibly and in the public interest.
He further argued that holding leaders accountable for poor performance would discourage impunity in public office, strengthen democratic institutions and deepen public confidence in governance.
Obi maintained that leadership must be measured by tangible outcomes rather than political rhetoric, stressing that Nigerians deserve a government capable of delivering security, economic stability and improved living standards.
His comments come amid growing public debate over the state of the economy, rising inflation, insecurity and the impact of recent government policies on ordinary Nigerians.
The remarks are expected to further intensify political discourse across the country as pressure mounts on the Tinubu administration to address worsening socio-economic challenges and demonstrate that its reforms can translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
