A protest erupted on Friday in Birnin Gwari town, the headquarters of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following the killing of a commercial driver and the abduction of nine other persons in separate attacks linked to suspected bandits operating within the area.
The demonstration was triggered by the death of Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver who was reportedly shot dead by armed bandits along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road. The deceased was said to be a grandson of one of the District Heads of the Birnin Gwari Emirate.
According to information gathered, Ibrahim was killed at Kwanan Giginya along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway when armed men opened fire on his commercial vehicle. He was reportedly killed on the spot while about five passengers travelling with him were abducted by the attackers before they fled the scene.
A relative of the deceased confirmed the development, describing the killing as another tragic reminder of the worsening security situation along the notorious Kaduna–Birnin Gwari axis.
In a separate incident, four farmers were also kidnapped while working on their farms in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area. The victims were reportedly carrying out their routine farming activities when gunmen stormed the area and whisked them away to an undisclosed location.
The twin attacks sparked widespread anger among residents, leading to protests against what many described as the continued activities of so-called “repentant” bandits despite claims of peace agreements and reconciliation efforts with armed groups operating in the region.
Sources within the community disclosed that the protest was eventually brought under control following the intervention of traditional rulers and community leaders who appealed for calm among aggrieved residents.
It was further gathered that the tension generated by the protest forced several herders and Fulani travellers moving in and out of the town to flee for fear of possible reprisals.
Residents expressed frustration over the recurring attacks, insisting that insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods across Birnin Gwari communities. They lamented that despite repeated assurances from authorities, armed groups still carry out killings, kidnappings and attacks on innocent citizens.
Community members also alleged that bandits operating within the area frequently seize motorcycles, mobile phones, cash and other valuables from victims during attacks, in addition to carrying out abductions and killings which they claimed are often underreported.
The latest incidents have further heightened concerns over insecurity along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari corridor, an area that has witnessed repeated attacks over the years despite efforts aimed at restoring peace.
Residents have called on security agencies to intensify patrols along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway and strengthen security presence in vulnerable farming communities to prevent further attacks and safeguard lives and property.
The attacks have continued to disrupt farming activities, economic movement and general safety across several rural communities within Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, leaving many residents fearful of further violence.
