The traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Salman Aweda (also reported as Salman Olatunji Aweda), has been confirmed dead in captivity after he was abducted by armed men who stormed his palace in a late-night attack.
Reports indicate that the assailants invaded the palace, overpowered security around the residence, and whisked the monarch away to an unknown location, throwing the community into panic and uncertainty.
The kidnappers were said to have contacted community representatives during the ordeal, demanding a ransom of ₦21 million, two motorcycles, and petrol before the monarch could be released. The demands, described as unusual and severe, heightened fears over the safety of the traditional ruler.
The attackers were also reported to have looted valuables and cash from the palace during the invasion.
Despite efforts reportedly made to negotiate his release, the abductors later confirmed that the monarch had died in captivity. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
His death has sparked grief and outrage in Olayinka community, with residents and traditional stakeholders lamenting the worsening insecurity in the area and across parts of Kwara South, where cases of abductions have become increasingly frequent.
Security authorities are yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident as investigations are expected to continue into the abduction and killing.
The development adds to growing concerns over the rising wave of kidnappings targeting traditional rulers and rural communities across the region.
