The United Actions for Democracy (UAD) has called on Nigerians across all regions, ethnic groups, religious affiliations, and social backgrounds to unite and participate in nationwide protests scheduled for June 12, citing the country’s escalating insecurity as an existential threat to national survival.
In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by its General Secretary, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, the pro-democracy coalition declared that the time had come for citizens to take collective action against the wave of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and violent criminality that continues to devastate communities across the country.
According to the group, insecurity has reached alarming proportions, affecting millions of Nigerians from Lagos in the South-West to Adamawa in the North-East, while leaving countless families displaced, bereaved, and living in fear.
“It is now very clear that Nigerians have to take their destinies into their own hands by rising together to defeat the mass insecurity that has become the biggest threat confronting the nation,” the statement read.
The organization urged citizens to set aside political, ethnic, and religious differences and mobilize for peaceful mass demonstrations on Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a symbolic moment to reaffirm the ideals of justice, freedom, accountability, and popular participation in governance.
The group maintained that the protests are intended not only to send a strong message to terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements, but also to draw attention to what it described as the failures and actions of those in positions of authority whose conduct has contributed to the deepening security crisis.
UAD stressed that Nigerians must rise above divisions that have historically weakened collective resistance to injustice and insecurity, insisting that national unity remains the strongest weapon against forces threatening the country’s stability.
“As Nigerians mark another Democracy Day, we must honestly confront the reality that millions still live far from the promises and benefits of true democracy. The time has come to resist all forms of impunity and demand a nation where citizens can live, work, learn, and travel without fear,” the statement added.
The organization further called on the National Union of Teachers (NUT) to join the nationwide actions in defence of teachers and students who have increasingly become targets of abductions, attacks, and violence across various parts of the country.
It also commended civic organizations and movements that have sustained public advocacy against insecurity and governance failures, including the TakeItBack Movement and the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), for their commitment to mobilizing citizens and workers toward collective action.
Particular attention was directed at student bodies nationwide, with the group urging student unions to assume a leading role in defending educational institutions and communities against insecurity. UAD condemned what it described as anti-student tendencies within sections of student leadership and called on students to reclaim their historic role as defenders of democratic values and social justice.
The coalition appealed to labour unions, civil society organizations, professional associations, community groups, youth organizations, and all democratic forces to march together on June 12 in a united display of resistance against insecurity and national decline.
According to the statement, only through collective action, courage, and solidarity can Nigerians begin the task of rebuilding a nation founded on justice, accountability, security, and democratic principles.
The statement concluded with a rallying call for unity and resistance, urging citizens across the federation to make June 12 a defining moment in the struggle for a safer and more democratic Nigeria.
