Fresh security concerns have gripped Nigeria’s North-East following a deadly insurgent assault on a military base in Borno State and growing outrage over the abduction of dozens of schoolchildren by suspected terrorists.

In the latest attack, suspected Boko Haram fighters stormed a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base in Mandaragira, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, killing at least five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The assault, which occurred during the early hours of Friday, sparked a fierce gun battle as troops struggled to repel the attackers. Security sources said the insurgents exploited poor visibility caused by heavy rainfall before launching the raid. Reports indicate that several terrorists were also killed during the confrontation.

The attack is the latest indication of a renewed offensive by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which have intensified attacks on military formations across the North-East in recent months. Analysts warn that the insurgents are increasingly targeting military installations in an attempt to seize weapons and weaken security operations in the region.

Meanwhile, anxiety deepened across Borno State on Saturday as community leaders and lawmakers demanded urgent action to rescue 42 schoolchildren reportedly abducted by terrorists in Askira/Uba Local Government Area. The children, who were said to be travelling for academic activities, remain in captivity, prompting fears among residents and renewed calls for stronger protection of schools and vulnerable communities.

The twin incidents have renewed concerns over the persistent insurgency that has plagued Nigeria’s North-East for more than a decade. Despite repeated military offensives and claims of major victories against terrorist groups, recent attacks suggest that insurgents continue to retain the capacity to strike military and civilian targets with deadly consequences.

As security agencies intensify operations across the region, Nigerians are once again confronted with the grim reality that the battle against terrorism remains far from over. For many families in Borno, the wait for peace continues amid fresh bloodshed, fear and uncertainty.
