In one of the largest promotion exercises in recent years, the Nigeria Police Force has elevated 17,952 junior officers across the country, underscoring its commitment to rewarding excellence, boosting morale, and strengthening professionalism within the Force.

The nationwide promotion, approved by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, affects officers serving in various commands, formations, and specialised units across the country.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the exercise includes the promotion of 165 Sergeants to the rank of Inspector, 73 Corporals to Sergeant, and a remarkable 17,714 Constables to the rank of Corporal.

The development confirms earlier reports that the Force leadership had concluded arrangements for the advancement of thousands of deserving personnel as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving welfare and enhancing operational effectiveness.

An internal wireless signal dated May 20, 2026, revealed that the promoted officers are drawn from key formations, including the IGP Monitoring Unit, STFPIB, TIU, SIU, the Force Education Office, POSSAP, and the Force Headquarters in Abuja, among others.

Speaking on the promotion exercise, IGP Disu described timely promotion as a critical component of the Force’s human resource strategy and a vital tool for motivating officers to remain dedicated to their constitutional responsibilities.

“Timely promotion remains a critical component of the Force’s human resource management strategy and a key tool for motivating officers to remain committed to the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities,” the IGP stated.

He emphasized that the advancement of personnel reflects the current leadership’s commitment to merit, career progression, and institutional development.

“The advancement of deserving personnel reflects the commitment of the current Police leadership to merit, career progression, and institutional development,” he added.

Congratulating the newly promoted officers, the IGP urged them to regard their elevation not as a reward alone but as a call to greater service, professionalism, discipline, and accountability.

“I congratulate all the newly promoted officers and charge them to see this elevation as a call to greater responsibility, professionalism, discipline, and dedication to service,” he said.

The police chief further reminded the officers of their duty to uphold integrity, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law while carrying out their responsibilities.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to recognising outstanding service, strengthening institutional capacity, and aligning policing standards with global best practices as it continues efforts to reform and modernise the nation’s law enforcement system.
