A groundbreaking initiative to tackle traffic congestion on the bustling streets of Calabar has been unveiled, signaling a paradigm shift in the fight against road obstruction. Motorists found disrupting traffic flow while loading or unloading passengers risk having their vehicles impounded by the state taskforce on traffic regulation.

Pastor Ekpeyong Cobham, the Commissioner for Transportation in Cross River State, revealed this groundbreaking development during a press briefing following a session with key stakeholders in the transport sector in Calabar.

Cobham emphasized the importance of keeping the streets clear to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent disruptions to daily commutes and business activities. He stressed the need for drivers to be mindful of their surroundings and to clear their vehicles promptly when stopping to pick up or drop off passengers.

“Clear well,” Cobham reiterated, “to avoid hindering fellow motorists and impeding the free movement of other road users. This slogan encapsulates our commitment to addressing the challenges we face in the transportation sector and marks the beginning of a comprehensive reorientation effort.”

Under the new regulations, vehicles found obstructing traffic will be impounded, and owners will be required to pay a fine before their vehicles are released. This measure is in line with Law No. 2 of 2015, which imposes penalties for traffic obstruction.

Cobham highlighted the need for a holistic approach to address the root causes of traffic congestion, including the lack of basic understanding among some drivers. He underscored the importance of engagement and reorientation efforts to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and promote responsible driving habits.

Looking ahead, Cobham outlined plans to launch an enlightenment campaign centered around the “Clear Well” slogan, with the aim of mobilizing support from stakeholders and the public. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and dialogue in shaping the future of the transportation sector in Cross River State.

The interactive session with drivers’ associations provided a platform for constructive dialogue and exchange of ideas on various issues affecting the transport sector. Key topics discussed included the implementation of state colors on commercial vehicles, driver welfare, leadership of transport unions, ticketing procedures, security measures, and enforcement of traffic regulations.

As Cross River State embarks on this bold campaign against traffic obstruction, it sets a precedent for proactive governance and community engagement in addressing critical issues affecting urban mobility and road safety.
