A Nigerian social media user identified as MrLea007 has alleged that officers of the Ekiti State Police Command unlawfully arrested, detained, and attempted to dispossess him of his belongings after he travelled into the state last month, a claim that has now gone viral across digital platforms and reignited conversations on police conduct and accountability in Nigeria.
In a video shared on TikTok on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the man recounted what he described as a disturbing encounter with security operatives shortly after his arrival in Ekiti State, claiming he was attacked twice before eventually being taken into custody under questionable circumstances.
According to him, the incident escalated after he began documenting events using multiple recording devices, including his phone, car camera system, and smart eyewear.
He alleged that upon arrival at the police station, some of his personal items were confiscated, and he was subjected to verbal intimidation.
“They took my eyeglasses from me. They told me, ‘Do I think Nigeria is America?’ They told me they would show me the true colour of Nigeria,” he said in the video.
MrLea007 further claimed that officers threatened to seize his vehicle and personal property, despite what he described as carrying less than N300,000 in cash at the time. He alleged that he was subsequently moved through the criminal justice process without being formally interviewed or allowed to make a proper statement.
“They said they will seize my properties, seize my cars… I was even thinking they wanted to kill me because they rushed me out of the station,” he stated.
He also alleged that he was later charged in court with offences including assault on a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle, charges he strongly denied, insisting that all documents relating to his car were valid and up to date.
According to his account, the court initially remanded him in custody, where he remained until a recent hearing during which the case was struck out.
“The judge struck out the case. The charges were very frivolous,” he said.
The video has since generated widespread reactions online, with many users expressing concern over alleged abuse of power, arbitrary arrests, and the treatment of civilians within Nigeria’s policing system.
Reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Abutu Sunday, said the Command was aware of the allegations and had commenced internal review of the matter, assuring that due process would be followed.
“I have seen the whole allegations, the Command is on it already and we will ensure justice is delivered,” he stated.
The Nigeria Police Force has not issued a detailed official statement specifically addressing the Ekiti incident as of the time of filing this report.
The controversy comes amid renewed scrutiny of police accountability nationwide, following separate disciplinary actions announced by the Force involving officers linked to a fatal shooting incident in Effurun, Delta State, where internal proceedings reportedly led to dismissal and prosecution of personnel involved.
As the Ekiti allegation circulates widely, it continues to fuel public debate over enforcement practices, citizens’ rights, and the growing role of social media as a platform for reporting alleged abuses that would otherwise remain within institutional channels.
