The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the reported directive by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordering a lawyer to kneel during proceedings, describing the action as inconsistent with Nigerian law and judicial standards.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NBA President Afam Osigwe said the incident involving defence counsel Marshall Abubakar, who represents activist Omoyele Sowore, raises serious concerns about the dignity of the legal profession and the conduct of the judiciary.
Osigwe noted that while judges have the authority to maintain order in courtrooms, such powers must be exercised within established legal procedures. He stressed that asking a lawyer or any individual to kneel is not a recognised disciplinary measure under Nigerian law.
“The courtroom must remain a place governed by law and decorum,” he stated, adding that any allegation of contempt should follow due process rather than arbitrary directives.
The NBA also reminded lawyers of their responsibility to act with professionalism and respect while representing clients, emphasising the need for mutual respect between the Bench and the Bar.
The association called for calm and urged that any grievances arising from the incident be addressed through proper institutional channels, assuring that it would engage relevant authorities to uphold judicial ethics and the rule of law.
