President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for a second five-year term.

The renewal, which took effect on Friday, February 27, was confirmed in a statement by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Audi is expected to officially resume duties on Monday.

President Tinubu charged the NSCDC chief to reposition the paramilitary agency to assume a more strategic role within Nigeria’s evolving security framework. He also urged him to strengthen the Corps’ operational capacity, particularly as the police concentrate on tackling banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.

Audi, who first assumed office as Commandant-General on March 1, 2021, was initially appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He formally retired on February 27 after reaching the mandatory retirement age and completing his first tenure, before being immediately reappointed.

Born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga Town, Nasarawa State, Audi began his academic journey at the College of Education, Akwanga, and later attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the University of Calabar; and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.

He joined the NSCDC as a volunteer in November 1996 and completed basic officer training in 1997. Rising steadily through the ranks, he served as a divisional officer in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State before his promotion to Commandant in 2007 and eventual elevation to the Corps’ top position.
