The minimum wage increase is to take effect from May 1, 2024.
Under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state. This significant decision was communicated through a press statement released on the government’s official platform, announcing that the implementation of the new minimum wage would commence on May 1, 2024.
According to the statement, Governor Obaseki made the announcement during the commissioning of the Labour House, a remarkable infrastructure project initiated by his administration. The Labour House, hailed as the most magnificent of its kind in Nigeria, was named after Comrade Sen. Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, a prominent labour unionist from Edo State.
The wage increase reflects the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants and recognizing their contributions to the state. It marks a significant rise from the previous minimum wage of N40,000, which was announced by the governor in May 2022.
Additionally, there are speculations that President Bola Tinubu may also announce a new minimum wage on May 1, coinciding with International Labour Day. If confirmed, the implementation of the new wage would be backdated to April, further underscoring the government’s dedication to supporting workers’ rights and well-being.
