Barely days after deadly attacks left scores of residents dead in parts of Kwara State, Senator Lola Ashiru, the Deputy Majority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election. The declaration has sparked public debate, coming at a time when many communities are still grieving and demanding urgent action on security.
Ashiru, who represents Kwara South Senatorial District, made his ambition public while meeting with executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Offa, his hometown. He said his decision followed deep personal reflection on the state’s challenges and his belief that he has the experience and understanding needed to lead Kwara from 2027.
“I have now decided to come into the race,” the senator told journalists. “By the grace of God, I will contest. I believe I have the credentials, exposure and understanding of Kwara State and its people to govern effectively.” He added that his long years of residence and public service in the state give him an advantage over other potential contenders.
However, the timing of the announcement has drawn attention because it follows a series of violent attacks across the state. In Ekiti Local Government Area, a forest guard was reportedly killed during an ambush in Koro community, while motorcycles were destroyed during the incident. Security concerns have continued to grow in border communities exposed to attacks by armed groups.
More recently, Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area was hit by a devastating assault that reportedly claimed over 170 lives, including traditional, religious and community figures. As residents mourn and call for accountability and stronger protection, Ashiru’s political declaration has added a new dimension to ongoing conversations about leadership, security and the future of Kwara State.
