The Kano State Government has clarified that corruption allegations against former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje are still active and unresolved, even after Governor Abba Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, made the statement during a live interview on Arise News, addressing concerns over what some see as a contradiction between Yusuf’s past criticism of Ganduje and his new political alignment with the former governor.

“All allegations are still active and remain before the courts. The government has not withdrawn any of them, and there is no interference in the judicial process,” Waiya said. “Nobody stopped these cases, and nobody will. It is entirely left to the courts.”

While in opposition, Governor Yusuf repeatedly accused Ganduje of corruption, making it a central point in his political campaigns. However, recent public appearances showing Yusuf alongside Ganduje including moments where Ganduje raised Yusuf’s hand in a show of solidarity have drawn criticism and accusations of political betrayal.

Waiya defended the move, describing it as part of a broader effort to foster unity and reconciliation in the state. “We are trying to set a foundation for reconciliation, for forgiveness, and to focus on the development and progress of Kano,” he said.

When pressed on whether reconciliation without justice sends the wrong message, Waiya emphasized the principle of presumption of innocence under Nigerian law. “Corruption allegations remain allegations until a court pronounces someone guilty. No court has declared Ganduje guilty of any of these charges. The judicial process is ongoing.”

The discussion also touched on speculation that Yusuf’s APC alignment could be politically motivated, aimed at consolidating Kano’s voter base ahead of the 2027 elections. Waiya denied this, stressing that the move is focused on governance and state development rather than election strategies.

“Getting things right in the country is the responsibility of everyone, not just the president or a political party,” he said. “All citizens have a role to play in ensuring progress and addressing the challenges facing Nigeria.”
