In a significant boost to Nigeria’s human rights and justice reform efforts, the Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN) on Thursday, January 8, 2026, recorded a landmark achievement with the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The GICN delegation, led by Edward Omaga, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the Network, was received by Mrs. Pwadumdi Okoh, Deputy Director (Legal), NHRC, at the Commission’s office in Abuja.
The MoU establishes a strategic institutional partnership aimed at advancing human rights protection, strengthening access to justice, and supporting the lawful decongestion of police stations and correctional centres across Nigeria. The collaboration will focus on coordinated legal interventions, human rights monitoring, capacity building, and sustained advocacy, particularly for indigent and vulnerable persons trapped within the criminal justice system.
Speaking on the significance of the agreement, GICN leadership described the MoU as a transition from advocacy to action, noting that the partnership provides a structured framework for translating years of grassroots human rights work into measurable national impact.
On her part, the NHRC reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with credible civil society organisations to address systemic rights violations, promote rule of law, and strengthen accountability within law enforcement and correctional institutions.
The agreement marks a critical step toward institutional collaboration in justice sector reform, reinforcing the shared vision of both organisations to reduce unlawful detention, protect detainees’ rights, and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
With this alliance, GICN says it is not only expanding its operational reach but also leaving a legacy anchored on integrity, justice, and human dignity.
